Some familiarity with databases and files is nice to have, but could be used as a first course book. The authors are all noted in their area, and the content is great However, the overall presentation of the material -- the graphics and visuals -- are not nearly as well done as is possible and standard for today's top text books.
And that's the reason for the average rating site Edition Verified download. I personally liked this book and could sit down and read it. My friends found it horrible to read and used it just for reference. If you are used to reading technical papers, scientific papers, or reading proofs you will enjoy it. It has a moderate amount of depth to it, but presents the material in an understandable way. I chose this book over the Introductory book because it had more information, and I plan to keep it after my class as a reference.
I used this book for a database class, and in spite of paying very little attention in the lectures, I got an A, primarily because this book is thorough and exactly dense enough: This book taught me everything I know about databases, and several other people since then.
While this book has its uses, it also has some of the standard flaws of academic computer science books, notably being overly pedantic and verbose at times, not to mention exorbitantly priced for the relatively little practical info you will get from it.
Database Systems: The Complete Book
There is some good -- albeit somewhat elementary -- coverage of a number of useful topics such as the relational algebra, relational design theory, index construction and data structures, and data mining. However, at five years old, the selection of topics can feel pretty dated for a text claiming to be "The Complete Book" on database systems. Verified download.
I used this for an intro to database management course. It's a very good introduction textbook for those who want to know the general basics.
I will definitely keeping this as a future reference. The authors have done a great job of breaking down a very large topic into many smaller, digestible pieces.

The work is obviously the product of long research and design, as the organization and handling of the content is superb. For a beginner, having no background in database systems what's a relational database? I was quickly up to speed within the first few chapters, and had a solid grasp of the theory behind database design.
I appreciate the use and multiple re-use of small examples that really get to the core of the concepts presented. Overall very well written and complete! One person found this helpful. In the Winter of , Hector Garcia-Molina used a "beta" version of this book, and covered the following parts: Sections 2. Other portions of the book that are not covered in CS may appear in another advanced course, CS, which talks about distributed databases and advanced transaction processing. Schools that are on the semester system have the opportunity to combine the use of this book with its predecessor: A First Course in Database Systems.
We recommend using that book in the first semester, coupled with a database- application programming project. The second semester could cover most or all of the content of this book. An advantage to splitting the study of databases into two courses is that students not planning to specialize in DBMS construction can take only the first course and be able to use databases in whatever branch of Computer Science they enter.
Jeff Ullman: Book Information
Prerequisites The course on which the book is based is rarely taken before the senior year, so we expect the reader to have a fairly broad background in the traditional areas iii iv of Computer Science. We assume that the reader has learned something about database programming, especially SQL.
It is helpful to know about relational algebra and to have some familiarity with basic data structures. Likewise, some knowledge of file systems and operating systems is useful.Read reviews that mention database systems relational algebra second half poorly written computer science data mining data structures site edition half of the book relational database written book book on database reference examples theory databases topics authors text textbook.
But if you have choice I would recommend finding another book. The second semester could cover most or all of the content of this book.
